Capstone (New Ventures Develop)
Throughout New Venture Develop, several key insights have profoundly shaped my understanding of launching and managing startups. First and foremost, I learned that every startup is inherently built on assumptions. Identifying these assumptions and systematically testing them is crucial to de-risking a startup. This process necessitates a clear plan and the execution of strategic tests that challenge these foundational assumptions.
Another significant takeaway is the importance of taking action. In the dynamic world of startups, inaction is often the greater risk compared to taking decisive steps—even if the outcomes are not as expected. Learning from both successes and setbacks is essential.

Finally, the role of teamwork cannot be overstated. Success in a startup heavily relies on the ability to delegate tasks and trust in the capabilities of others. Trying to shoulder all responsibilities alone is a sure path to failure. Recognizing and celebrating small victories also plays a critical role in maintaining team morale and momentum. Given the frequent challenges and rejections faced in this environment, each positive result deserves recognition and celebration, serving as a crucial motivation to continue pushing forward.

Shifting focus, the capstone experience has been transformative in reshaping my self-perception and my understanding of entrepreneurship. Initially, I was overly critical of myself, particularly following the setbacks with my startup, Fanful. I had unrealistic expectations for perfection in both my personal performance and the business's trajectory. However, engaging with peers facing similar challenges helped me realize that entrepreneurship is inherently challenging. This realization taught me to be more forgiving of myself and understand that setbacks are natural, focusing instead on resilience and response to these challenges.
Moreover, my perspective on what determines success in startups has evolved. I now believe that perseverance and the ability to persist in the face of continuous rejections are more indicative of potential success, especially for first-time founders. This resilience is something I admire and will continue to uphold as a fundamental value in future entrepreneurial endeavors.

In its totality, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship classes were among my favorites at Duke, playing a pivotal role not only in my entrepreneurial development but also in my growth as a thinker. At its heart, entrepreneurship is about solving problems creatively and effectively. The skills and mindset I've developed are applicable beyond just business—they are tools I can use in personal and professional settings alike.
For instance, when faced with challenges in life, I am now better equipped to devise and implement solutions. This involves testing assumptions, prioritizing tasks, and delegating responsibilities. These practices, honed during my time in the program, will undoubtedly influence my approach to future challenges, ensuring that I apply my learning in diverse contexts beyond Duke.
